The “Date”

Bill is the type of guy who makes you weak in the knees when he smiles. He is head-to-toe physical perfection, he exudes a you-can-talk-to-me vibe that is instantly approachable, and he’s intelligent to boot. So you can imagine how incredibly self-conscious I felt when I showed up to digital-telepathy prior to the interview in a Padre hat and jeans, and he, of course, was looking effortlessly gorgeous.

We decided to head to the Tractor Room around 6:30 for drinks, where we ended up outside, under heat lamps, overlooking 5th. Our waitress was instantly mesmerized by Bill; not so much by me. She made it a point to engage him in a conversation about Bourbon, and lingered as long as socially acceptable. I later told Bill that she had the hots for him, but his reaction seemed to indicate that he hadn’t noticed her ostentatious attempts at flirting.

I started the grilling almost immediately. Where are you from? Why are you in San Diego? Why are you single? What attracts you to a woman? Over the course of two drinks each, and some of the best appetizers I’ve ever had, I learned that Bill was born in Michigan, moved to Orlando for school, lived in Chicago for a stint (the birthplace of dt), and finally relocated and moved the business to San Diego. I was also able to glean that Bill’s a victim of the 1 year relationship curse. He meets a woman, things progress to serious levels, and 1 year later the fire dies. What I found incredibly endearing, however, is that Bill is genuinely desirous of finding someone to slow down with, but he’s not willing to compromise in order to do so. He most certainly doesn’t want a bimbo on his arm and, in fact, he’s actually most attracted to a woman who oozes self-confidence, is secure in who she is, and isn’t afraid to get down and dirty playing sports.

We covered a full spectrum of topics that included love, ex-girlfriends, personal passions, weaknesses and vulnerabilities, and life goals. He told me stories about his childhood, constantly feeling a little less perfect than his sister, and the insecurities that have haunted him ever since. He also shared that a part of him wants to be infamous, and anything but the nice guy he appears to be. “Nice is boring,” he said, “I want to be mysterious.” Bill is driven to do more, achieve more, and reach his full potential, but he seems to think of himself as “under the radar” at the moment.

When it comes to love, he’s ready for it. Sure he has a few scars. Like the ex-girlfriend he was chemically and physically drawn to — 3 months into the relationship, and just a few days before its end, he felt like he could marry this woman. She broke his heart without a real reason. Two years later, though, he’s open to love and fantasizes about traveling with the woman of his dreams, sharing incredible experiences, and having at least two children — one girl and one boy. He’s crazy about the idea of guiding a child through life’s rich experiences.

The Juicy Details

I promised I wouldn’t share all the dirty details of our discent into discussions of a sexual variety, but I can share that the best sex he ever had was…well…actually he believes that it’s still yet to come. Bill very much believes that really great sex is in the moment and that once the relationship is over, the level of greatness fades; a lost memory if you will. When I asked about factors that could lead to great sex, he blushed a bit and mentioned that he really enjoys hearing a woman breathe.

Bill’s a pretty busy guy, but if you’re lucky maybe you’ll run into him at a social event or happen upon one of his Wednesday evening softball games.
