You know that MySpace account you created 4 years ago that is littered with bad HTML and outdated information, well you just might want to take it out and dust it off a bit. TechCrunch is reporting that Auditude, an ad platform implemented by MySpace, will…

…automatically identify any uploaded video clips from a number of shows produced by MTV Networks (including my personal favorite “The Daily Show”), and will display an overlay when the clip is played that shows which episode the clip originally came from, its original air-date, and links to online stores where users can buy the entire episode.

and…

Auditude can fingerprint a portion of a video that is only a few seconds long and identify which show it was originally taken from. Once the clip is identified Auditude will overlay an ad within the video, allowing publishers to monetize their content even when it was uploaded by someone without permission and without any legible tagging information.

Why it Matters

MySpace, via Auditude, is acting as the legal mediator between all of us who uploaded licensed content and the usually stodgy network types, like MTV (and most likely other networks that follow suit). Essentially it’s a win for everyone involved. The user gets to upload their content without fear of having it removed, the network gets an ad placemant, MySpace gets a cut, and suddenly a format for monetization of online video becomes tangible.

In a previous post I talked about My Online Wonderland, and how I use Netvibes to aggregate content around the topics that help me stay relevant in the online space, and are also of personal interest to me. I recommend for everyone, regardless of industry or predilection, to do the same.

If you’re looking for blog posts and news stories related to celebrities, fashion, politics, science, sports, and gaming, but don’t know where to start, then check out Alltop, a new site from Guy Kawasaki and the creators of Truemors. If you’re looking for more tech and web related content, Alltop might be able to help, but you’ll have to look under the Egos category, which happens to be the category most relevant to me, not because of the name, but because many of the blogs I read are listed in this category (including Guy’s own blog).

My personal thoughts on Alltop are:

It’s a good place to start for all the top stories…

…if all the top stories you’re looking for are blog posts or news stories from one of the 30 (per category) site-identified sources. Here’s where I take a little issue. I checked out the About page and I couldn’t seem to find an explanation for how content sources are identified as “top” in each category, and what makes certain sites appear higher on the page than others. I’d like to know if this is just one person’s definition of the top stories, or if there is something more scientific or data driven going on here.
