It’s a genius idea. In a nutshell…

The perks of having Jason wear your shirt include:

The price - it’s a pretty cheap price to pay for the exposure he’s offering online and off

Daily video on YouTube and Ustream

Daily photos on the blog and Flickr

Daily posts on the blog and Twitter

Company logo on the calendar

When I discovered the site (iwearyourshirt started following me on Twitter), I was so impressed by the ingenuity of the idea that I asked Jason Sadler, the man behind the shirt, to chat with me via Skype so I could get the real scoop.

Here’s what I found out…

Jason’s been working in the web space for 10 years, and he has hands-on experience with social media and various online marketing initiatives. The iwearyourshirt idea came to him at the end of the October, he got the website up a week later, and started promoting his idea via Facebook, Twitter, and email. Just a few short weeks later, Jason’s garnered a ton of interest with all of January and February already sold out, and widely celebrated days like New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day selling out as well.

I asked Jason how he planned to provide the same quantity and quality of exposure for each t-shirt purchaser given that some days are more inherent to exposure than others. Jason says that he doesn’t expect any forseable obstacles to making sure each t-shirt is promoted both online and off; he’s fully prepared to livestream everything from his everyday activities to family gatherings and opening presents on Christmas day.

Jason isn’t alone in his ground breaking marketing initiative, there’s also Girl in Your Shirt who was covered by TechCrunch and certainly has the cute girl factor working in her favor. But Jason seems pretty confidant that he’s got a large enough network to compete, and he asserts that he’s no copycat—iwearyourshirt was launched before Girl in Your Shirt. Something tells me that both entreprenuers will do just fine. Given our economy, there’s a huge opportunity for startups and small businesses to reach a broad audience at a super cheap price.

I’d really love to hear your thoughts on this. Are you considering using Jason’s upper half to promote your business? What day would you buy and why? Personally, I’m contemplating purchasing my birthday and forcing Jason to wear one of my tiny sleeveless @jbruin tees, but that would just be cruel.

I’ve blogged about the behind-the-scenes of Jenn2.0, a web series in the making, and how we’re using new media to make new media, but this weekend we start the heavy lifting and begin production—well actually I get to participate as Associate Producer and bring my french press; the NAS guys have to do all the hard work.

Several of the scenes call for extras, especially since one of the scenes is a reenacted version of our SDTweetups, but with a little boyfriend drama thrown in. Of course I’ll be there with all the awesome guys and gals from NAS. If you don’t know Kevie, Cody, Josh, and Megan, you should! You can also meet our fabulously talented cast which includes Alexis (she plays me), Lourna (she plays my faux rival Larissa), Chad (he plays Dave who has a secret crush on me), and Ian (my faux boyfriend - if only…). So contact Kevin, come be an extra, and then stay and have a drink with us after the shoot.

If you want to be involved here’s the info:

Background Actors Needed

Keating Hotel, Minus 1 Lounge at 5th and F Street

Sunday, Nov 16th, 1-5
Tuesday, Nov 18th, 4-7

Please send contact info to:

Kevin Calumpit (@kcalumpit)
kcalumpit [at] nashd.com

Requirements:
- Wear muted solid colors.
- Try to wear the same clothes both days.
- Will need to sign model release.
- Refreshments will be available.
- Minus 1 lounge will open following wrap.

MakingJenn20.com has more behind-the-scenes videos walking you through script changes, casting, introduction to the cast and crew, and of course a little bit of me.

We Need a New Logo, Want to Design It For Us?

Rob Lewis threw together the existing logo, but we all agree that it could be a ton better. We also know that there are ridiculously talented individuals out there who might be interested in designing our show logo. We’re kinda like an early stage startup so we we’re strapped for cash, but if you’re interested you’re work would obviously be promoted and attributed to you on all Jenn2.0 promotional materials including the MakingJenn20 site and any other show related entities. Plus we’ll love you forever.

Leave a comment, send me an email, reply via Twitter, or get in touch with Rob Lewis (@golewis), Executive Producer, directly.

Jason Wieland, CEO of Notify.me, sat down with me last week to give me some info for my StartupSD.net post on his San Diego startup. It’s a nifty little site that is taking on the likes of Alerts.com with push notifications. You can read the full article for more information on the startup, but here’s a little tidbit that is worth paying attention to—Notify.me offers Twitter users a nice little hack to receive tweets via IM. Here’s how (it’s easier than it looks):

1. Sign up with Notify.me. They’re in private beta, but Wieland gave me this link to share with StartupSD readers and you.

2. Go to the Account tab and select “Destinations.” Follow the steps to configure IM as a desitination.

3. Use FreeMyFeed to get an RSS feed for your Twitter updates. Enter - http://twitter.com/statuses/friends_timeline.rss into the feed url text box. Also enter your Twitter username and password.

4. Copy the output URL.

5. Navigate back to Notify.me and select “Sources” from the Account options.

6. Paste the URL in the Feed textbox and click “Add Feed.”

If you do nothing else, you’ll receive all your Twitter friends’ updates via IM, but if you’d like to filter the tweets you receive you can either exclude keywords (like twitter usernames) or include keywords (like jbruin, sdtweetup, and “san diego” to track a filtered subset of tweets. It works really well and it’s about 1 - 2 minutes faster per notification than the TwitterSpy/GoogleTalk work around. So go have fun!

I recently sat down with Troy Malone and Daniel Marashlian of Pelotonics, a San Diego based startup taking on the likes of 37signals with their group collaboration software, to get the scoop on their product for StartupSD. They’re certainly smart guys with a pretty impressive product, but I was completely blown away by their innovative approach to real-time interactive customer service.

Malone and Marashlian, a part from being likable and incredibly hilarious (check out their Halloween costumes), are living and breathing the core of community building by making themselves entirely available to the users of their product. Their using Ustream.tv to broadcast live daily from their offices in Sorrento Valley. Got a question, problem, or just want to maximize your usage of their software? Just ping Troy during business hours on PeloTV and he’ll not only answer your question, but he’ll show you how to do it yourself using WebcamMax, a super awesome camera utility that allows you to switch to a view of your desktop (I found a neat alternative for the Mac called CamTwist), to visually walk you through the step by step process of your inquiry. It’s customer service meets community building using the best of social media, and I absolutely love it.

I was surprised to find such innovation so close to home, but it turns out that Malone and Marashlian haven’t always been so savvy. In fact, Malone’s old school marketing and PR approach led him to Marshal Kirkpatrick, a New Media Consultant and Lead Writer for ReadWriteWeb. Malone emailed a plethora of bloggers with a press release looking for web coverage only to find that his approach was fruitless and flawed. Kirkpatrick was the only blogger to respond, and Malone decided that he’d rather have Kirkpatrick’s help as consultant than a single blog post. Obviously Malone’s decision has paid off. He’s making innovative strides and thinking like a savvy web entrepreneur.

I give him huge kudos for trying something new and not being afraid of taking risks. Did I mention that in the process of switching to this “new” marketing approach they totally eliminated their marketing budget that was thousands of dollars per month? Small business owners, are you paying attention? Let’s just hope that Pelotonics can scale their customer service efforts with their growth. Good luck guys!
